By intellectual property, we mean the broader concept of a company’s intangible assets, including intangible assets protected by the legal framework of intellectual property rights, such as patents, trademarks, design protection, copyright, and “soft IP” at the diposal of companies that may not be covered by the formal legal system, such as confidential know-how, trade secrets, data, algorithms, etc.

IP resources for businesses

The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has produced guidance materials for companies wishing to commercialise their intellectual property in this way. It is a good, comprehensive introduction to what to expect when embarking on the commercialisation of intellectual property.

The EU IPR Helpdesk is an initiative of the European Union that provides free advice and information on the protection and management of intellectual property (IP). It is aimed in particular at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), researchers and people involved in innovation projects to help them use and protect their intellectual property effectively, both in Europe and internationally.

One of the most valuable parts of the IPR Helpdesk is the quick access to experts and knowledge on specific international markets through dedicated regional helpdesks. For example, they can quickly put you in touch with IP experts in China, South-East Asia, South America, Africa and India.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has also compiled the recommended and necessary tools for businesses to handle intellectual property in a compact toolbox. Find out more about them at the link below.

We have put together a compact guide and learning material on the basic principles and main types of intellectual property. The material gives a quick overview of WHY intellectual property is important, WHAT the different types of intellectual property are and HOW to ensure they can be used by businesses or other creators.

The learning material was compiled by the best Estonian IP experts and EIS IP consultants. It is intended for businesses, students, researchers and anyone else who needs a quick and practical overview of intellectual property and its practical application.

The learning material is freely available to all under the Creative Commons 4.0 BY-SA licence.

In our English podcast aimed at technology and startup companies, we talk about intellectual property in easy-to-understand language. The speakers are companies themselves and the IP experts who advise them. The companies include Bolt and Cleveron, and the experts include people who have advised Starship and Dipperfox.
